When I wake and Grace isn’t there, my gut drops out of panic. It takes me a few seconds to talk myself down, reasoning that I’m in a safe place now and nothing terrible has happened to her.

Still, cold sweat breaks out across my skin. I hurry to get up and pull on some clean clothes. Even that is somewhat of a novelty for me.

I know for sure I’ve never washed my own clothes. Having Lorain around is like having an invisible fairy who makes sure everything is spotless, but you never know if she’s even been there.

I hurry to the dining area and I can smell the bacon cooking a mile away. To my relief, Grace is there, holding a huge cup of black coffee and wrapping her lips around a long, thin cigar as if it’s the last smokable in the universe. She smiles and waves as I come through the door.

“Hey, baby,” I whisper against her cheek. “Where did you go?”

“I was hanging out with Leah. Ricksan was nice enough to let me bum one of his cigars. Back on the base, they used to say a strong coffee and a smoke was the breakfast of champions.”

I laugh a little as I sit down. Before I can blink, Lorain drops a plate in front of me, covered in well-cooked eggs, crisp bacon, and pancakes. She brushes off my thanks and hurries back to the kitchen.

“Okay,” Leah says, crawling out from under a nearby bench. “We’re connected.”

Forkful of food halfway to my mouth, I ask, “What are we doing?”

“Video call with the other captains,” Grace says. The room falls into a still quiet as lines of static flow across the wide screen Leah has just hooked up.

“Come in, Lance,” Leah calls out. “Do you read?”

“I read,” Aryn’s voice crackles, then his face comes in clear on the screen. It immediately splits as the other signals come through and Drogan and Vishar appear in separate windows.

“What’s your position, Rustbucket?” Aryn asks.

“Not far off now. I have good intel suggesting Wick is right up our butts.”

“What intel?” Vishar asks suspiciously.

“I have a friend on The Hunter,” Leah replies. “You got a problem with that?”

“Only because most of us don’t have any friends,” Drogan snaps.

“Look, she’s on our side, okay?” Leah says with exasperation.

“I’m not so sure,” Aryn cuts in. “But it doesn’t matter. We have fifteen proud ships here ready to deal with him.” Aryn practically puffs out his chest.

“Fifteen?” Leah says. “Any of those the size of The Killswitch, by any chance?”

“No,” Aryn answers, “but we’re all good captains.”

“Wick has at least fifty ships,” Leah drops the news in a dull voice. “At least fifty.”

There’s a lot of babble for a few minutes and I stuff my face, trying not to listen. The more intel we get, the more it looks like we’re completely and utterly fucked.

“There’s something else.” Grace stands up and heads for the screen, stubbing out her cigarette. “The Manifestation.”

There’s a brief silence until Vishar breaks it.
